In Defense of Animals is searching for remote volunteers to play an essential role in creating our annual Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants list. Ideal candidates will be able to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours per week, from November - January 2022.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
The TWZ Volunteer will work directly with IDA Staff, including our Ten Worst Zoo Consultant to achieve the following:
- Compile information utilizing credible news articles, peer-reviewed studies, and direct communication with zoos, organizations, and field experts
- Brainstorm and create effective strategies to influence change for each zoo
- Locate and obtain necessary permissions for use of elephant images
- Create compelling and factual essays to emphasize the cruelty elephants endure at chosen facilities
- Create media releases for each zoo
- Communicate information via email and phone calls with the media in a professional and timely manner (throughout the launch week)
Desired Skills and Experience
- Strong desire to expose the cruelty captive elephants face throughout North America
- Ability to collaborate with many team members and stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and adhere to deadlines
- Persuasive writing and research skills
- Solid verbal and written communicator
- Strategic thinking

In Defense of Animals is a 501(3)(c) international non-profit organization dedicated to ending the exploitation and abuse of animals by raising the status of animals beyond that of mere property, and by defending their rights, welfare and habitat. IDA's efforts include educational events, cruelty investigations, boycotts, grassroots activism, and hands-on rescue through our sanctuaries in Mississippi and Cameroon, Africa. The world headquarters are located in San Rafael, California.
