The SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program provides health insurance information and free, unbiased, and confidential counseling assistance to all current and prospective Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers. Through a network of specially trained volunteers, SHINE works to empower individuals to make the best decisions for their individual needs. As a SHINE/Senior Medicare Patrol Volunteer, you will help us meet our mission by performing one or all variety of functions, including:

1) Provide information, counseling, assistance in person, virtual or by phone

2) Deliver educational presentations

3) Distribute educational and promotional materials in your community

4) Assist with general program support

5) Recruit additional volunteers

6) Educate community partners

7) Learn to protect, detect and report Medicare fraud and abuse


1) Interest in helping people and the local community

2) Customer service mind-set including professionalism, tact and courtesy in dealing with individuals served

3) Strong listening and comprehension skills

4) Basic computer and internet skills

5) Attend Volunteer Orientation Presentation provided by local program

6) Complete the SHINE Online Orientation Module

7) Complete Online Training

8) Attend a virtual 3 day interactive training via ZOOM

9) Successful completion of Basic Training Exam with score of 80% or higher

10) Six mentoring sessions with a seasoned volunteer

11) Routine local trainings and meetings

12) Pass all screenings required if applicable
