Before Covid, MVP started an internship program that gave participants a hands-on and in-depth opportunity to learn about editing and book publishing. The Publisher worked directly with interns teaching them about all aspects of book publishing: acquiring the best manuscripts, contracting with author and author relations, editing the selected titles, developing succinct descriptions of the book and catalogue copy, understanding of the role of text and cover design, pre-publication book promotion, typesetting, the printing process, marketing to social and print media, among other topics. Covid has slightly changed our approach in that, in the past the intern would meet with the publisher once a week, be trained on a specific topic and given opportunities to be involved in all aspects of the book trade. As the intern progressed, they would be given more independent responsibilities for creating and launching our book publication. While Covid is ongoing, the contact between the publisher and the interns have been linmited to phone calls, zoom sessions and FaceTime. And, at times when both the publisher and its interns are fully vaccinated there will be a opportunities for one-on-one discussions. We have regular interns from the Central Connecticut State University, Writing Program. But, this case, we are looking for volunteer interns who are interested in learning about book publishing with an eye to eventually entering the book editing publishing, marketing, promotion, social media management world.
