420s sailing at dusk on Lake Calhoun

Whether supporting the racing, outreach, or membership programs, there are many opportunities to help foster a vibrant sailing community in the City of Lakes at the Minneapolis Sailing Center (MSC).

SAILING CENTER
  • Outreach Program Captain/Instructor: MSC is expanding our outreach program to provide sailing opportunities to folks who otherwise may not get the chance. We need volunteers to captain our Ensigns during these outreach events and Free Sailing Sundays.

  • Boat Setup and Fleet Maintenance: MSC has over 100 boats in the fleet. We need help rigging and launching the boats in early April (420s) and early May (Ensigns). We also need help de-rigging and storing the boats in October. In the offseason, we need help maintaining the boats at our winter workshop.

  • Junior Instructor: Youth ages 15-16 volunteer for half the day during youth summer camps and attend Youth Racing 420 class the other half of the day free of charge.

  • Member Liaison and Ambassador: Meet members at the lake to introduce them to the program and help them work towards certification in different boats. Ambassadors are skilled skippers who help spread their love of sailing by bringing new people sailing.

  • Event Support: Support community-building events at MSC. Set up and breakdown of hosting space, food service, check-in, etc.

Mission Statement

The mission of Minneapolis Sailing Center is to teach sailing to all in a fun and supportive environment and foster a vibrant sailing community in the City of Lakes.

Description

The Minneapolis Sailing Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) sailing center. MSC was founded in 1989 by parents from the Calhoun Yacht Club who wanted a formal program for their children to learn to sail and to introduce the sport to others in the area. MSC has grown to one of the largest sailing schools in the midwest with enrollment of more than 1000 sailors last summer.

We offer summer sailing camps for youth ages 4 to 18 where students learn to sail in small groups. In the evenings we host adult sailing classes and a membership program that allows for the use of our fleet throughout the summer.

We believe sailing is a pathway for personal growth and development. Beyond teaching sailing skills, we hope to instill self-reliance, confidence, cooperation, and an appreciation of nature in our students. Many generations of families have been defined by their sailing experiences on Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun).
