Seed Collecting

Whether you’re picnicking, hiking, or paddling by, Furstenberg has a lot of wildlife to appreciate. Native plants are a cornerstone to natural communities, allowing insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and other organisms to thrive. At this workday we will be collecting wild seeds from native plants-an easy, all-ages activity that is educational, while at the same time provisioning future restoration efforts. We will also be using handsaws and loppers to cut and remove invasive shrubs. Meet us at the parking lot off Fuller Rd.

Pre-registration through VolunteerHub is encouraged; please stay home if you are feeling ill. NAP continues to monitor recommendations from health officials, volunteers registered for events will be notified in advance of any changes to the workday. Please wear long pants and closed-toed shoes and bring a water bottle and leather gloves. All minors should be accompanied by a guardian. Tools and know-how provided.

About Natural Area Preservation

Location:

City of Ann Arbor Parks, Ann Arbor, MI 48105, US

Mission Statement

Natural Area Preservation (NAP) works to protect and restore Ann Arbor's natural areas and to foster an environmental ethic among its citizens. This involves conducting plant and animal inventories, ecological monitoring, and stewardship projects in Ann Arbor parks. These tasks are performed by both staff and volunteers.

Description

One third of NAP's field work is done by volunteers, so community involvement is vital to the success of its conservation efforts. NAP projects take volunteers well beyond the realm of litter clean-up into broader areas of concern, such as maintaining biodiversity and restoring damaged ecosystems. Through the combination of hands-on involvement and scientific understanding, NAP hopes to encourage and support a connection between individual volunteers and their surrounding natural environment. By sharing this experience with friends and neighbors, volunteers play a crucial role in fostering an environmental ethic in the community.
