The Salvation Army - San Francisco, CA

For over 60 years, The Salvation Army has delivered Thanksgiving meals to around 4000 homebound seniors and disabled adults.

COVID-19 has impacted everyone, and the elderly and housebound adults in our community have been impacted more than most as they experience even more isolation than usual. The special touch of a fresh holiday meal and a warm greeting from our volunteers will be extra special this Thanksgiving!

COVID-19 Measures:
To ensure the meals can be delivered safely for our volunteers and clients, we have implemented a number of changes as follows:

  • A catering company will prepare and package the meals off-site for safety and expediency (no meal prep by volunteers).
  • Delivery routes will be pre-assigned and emailed to drivers before Thanksgiving
  • Check in and meal pickup on Thanksgiving Day will be drive-up (volunteers will remain in their vehicles) (Note: Deliveries will still be made door-to-door)
  • Masks and social distancing for ALL volunteers

(Full details are provided in the Volunteer Packet upon registration.)

We need volunteers for-
  • Greeters -Greet drivers and make sure their paperwork and routing information is ready for check-in;
  • Check-in - check-in drivers and collect paperwork;
  • Provide Traffic control; and
  • Load-in - load food boxes into vehicles.
  • Make deliveries - drivers must have their own vehicle AND at least one passenger to accompany you on deliveries. (We cannot match drivers with passengers- thanks for understanding!).

Notes for delivery shifts:
  • 20 meal routes (2 food boxes)
  • 40 meal routes - less stops but more deliveries at those stops (4 food boxes)
  • (NOTE: Drivers - please only reserve ONE SPOT PER VEHICLE. If reserving a spot for a 40 Meal Route Shift, please ensure you have space for 4 food boxes. Thank you!)

All volunteers must register through The Salvation Army volunteer site by copying and pasting the link below into a browser and following the steps. You will be provided with full details, complete volunteer paperwork and choose your preferred shift(s). and paste into browser window)

Thank you for sharing your Thanksgiving morning with us! We cannot do this without you and we appreciate your generosity of time.

Mission Statement

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human need in His name without discrimination.

The Salvation Army was established in London in 1865, and since 1883 has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area, offering practical support, spiritual comfort and a critical safety net to people in need. The safety net is funded in part by donations from the Red Kettle Campaign which started in San Francisco in 1891. Nearly 600,000 San Franciscans receive assistance from the Army annually through a range of social services; clothing and shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry, opportunities for underprivileged children, alcohol rehabilitation, transitional housing, nutritional and housing support for seniors and relief for disaster survivors. For every dollar donated to The Salvation Army, 82 cents is used to support those services in the 16 facilities throughout San Francisco and South San Francisco communities.
