Do you live or work near the City of Bowie, Maryland? Are you interested in giving back to the community of Bowie and making a difference in the life of a young person?

The Bowie Teen Mentoring Program invites you to apply to be a mentor if you are willing to:

- Make a commitment to a high school youth for the 2021-2022 school year (9/8/21 - 6/21/22).

- Meet with teen for at least 30 minutes, once a week.

- Agree to an interview and security screening.

- Attend initial mentor training and occasional follow-up training.

Please Note:

Meetings are IN-PERSON, unless prohibited per local Covid-19 guidelines. Should local health guidance not advise face-to-face interactions, the program will transition to virtual mentoring (via video conference). Our mentors are encouraged to continue with their student throughout their high school journey. For this reason, we seek mentors who live or work in the Bowie area.

Mission Statement

We are committed to providing a continuum of community based mental health services and relevant drug and alcohol prevention activities for the youth and families of the Bowie community. We are dedicated to excellence in service, innovation in programming, and responsiveness to our community. Bowie Youth and Family Services, BYFS, was established in 1971 as a youth services bureau to promote positive outcomes for youth, prevent juvenile delinquency, and to help families resolve issues that create tension and conflict. As one of five youth services bureaus in Prince George's County, our defined service population includes families who have children age 18 and under living in the home who live in Bowie or the surrounding communities in Prince George's County. Providing a welcoming environment for families in crisis, BYFS offers expertise in family therapy, a variety of groups, both educational and therapeutic, community outreach services and other school-based services.

Description

BYFS is certified by the State of Maryland as a youth services bureau. Families are referred to BYFS from many sources, including: Prince George's county schools, parents, Department of Juvenile Services, health care providers, insurance companies, and family and friends. Staff includes social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, and an alcohol and drug prevention specialist.
