Mission Statement

Sparrow Freedom Project's mission is to build a survivor-led community supporting and empowering exploited and trafficked persons on their journey to achieving independence trough services and prevention.

Description

Sparrow Freedom Project (SFP) was founded in November 2017 by Michigan resident, Anita Hoepner, a daughter of Vietnamese refugees and survivor of repeated childhood sexual abuse. Hoepner channeled her past experiences and heart for humanitarian work to create an organization with a mission to raise awareness about the realities of human trafficking. SFP gradually evolved into a victim/survivor centered agency, providing emergency relief for exploited and trafficked individuals.

Since mid-2018, in collaboration with local agencies, survivor leaders, and partners, SFP has touched the lives of hundreds of men, women, and children impacted by human trafficking and exploitation in Michigan. Fulfilling over 700 assistance requests to date, SFP provided emergency relief and basic needs, such as: meals, groceries, clothing, toiletries/hygiene products, household items, as well as financial assistance with emergency shelter, rent, relocation, car repairs, transportation, bills, and more. SFP remains steadfast in its effort in education professionals and communities about human trafficking on a state and national level through local awareness events and structured training.

The organization is currently working towards opening a Resource/Drop-In Center in Detroit, providing immediate temporary shelter (7-10 days) for trafficked and exploited individuals. The center will also provide on-site services, such as counseling, beds, meals, day-time programs, and wraparound support.
