Dog Care at the Shelter

ORGANIZATION: Humane Society for Boone County

  • 10 people are interested

Dog care consists of two shifts, 7 days per week. Morning shift has a flexible start time of 7am to 9am. Evening shift has a flexible start time of 5pm to 7pm. Dog care shifts are generally 2 to 3 hours of cleaning kennels, feeding, walking, playing in the fenced play yard and loving on dogs! We usually house 7 to 10 dogs at the shelter - the rest are in foster! We ask volunteers to commit to at least one shift per month for a minimum of six months. Most volunteers do more! It's a rewarding way to help your local animal shelter!

Dog care training: 3 to 4 training sessions of 2 to 3 hours each before being released. After release, you are encouraged to sign up for shifts with seasoned volunteers until you feel comfortable. We offer continued training with our dog leads on positive reinforcement training techniques, clicker training, and reading dog body language.

All volunteers working alone must be 18 years or older for dog care. Teens 14 years and older can volunteer with their parent/guardian.
