This training is for new or existing volunteers with Boulder Valley Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO). Boulder Valley ICO (formerly Inner City Outings) is an all-volunteer outreach program of the Sierra Club that provides free nature outings and wilderness adventures to children and families in Boulder County and beyond who would not have the opportunities any other way. We provide the food, transportation, and logistics for every outing we offer. We also lend participants all of the specialized equipment and clothing needed for our outings.
This training will cover everything that a volunteer needs to know to run outings with Boulder Valley ICO, from the Sierra Club policies on medications to the process of planning a trip to actually leading the outing itself. The training will also include our curriculum on Child Abuse Recognition & Prevention.
If you are new to Boulder Valley ICO, this is a great opportunity to meet your fellow volunteers. The Outdoor Leadership Training (OLT) 101 & 201 satisfies the outdoor leadership training requirements for Outings Leader Certification. For more on volunteering with Boulder Valley ICO, please visit the volunteer page on our website. If you have questions about volunteering with us, please contact Michael at boulderico.org.
The course runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, 11/6 and 11/7. The course takes place at the Altona Grange in Longmont. Bathrooms, kitchen, and ample parking are available.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.
About Boulder Valley ICO
637 South Broadway, Suite B, Boulder, CO 80305, US
Boulder Valley Inner City Outings aims to enrich the lives of our participants and to instill in these children wonder and respect for nature and wilderness. We are a non-political entity, focused on sharing our love of the outdoors with children who would not have these experiences any other way.
Boulder Valley Inner City Outings is an outreach program of the Sierra Club that takes children from low-income families in Boulder County on free nature outings and wilderness adventures. Our outings include everthing from snowshoeing to multi-day backpacking.
We do not preach environmentalism to participants. Instead, we take children to amazing places at let nature to the talking.
We also run a free youth leadership for program participants that teaches the basics of outdoor leadership, advanced outdoor skills, some earth and life science, critical thinking skills, and the basics of environmental stewardship. We also run a water sampling and fly fishing program in partnership with the City of Boulder, Boulder Flycasters, and Water Sentinels (the Sierra Club's national water sampling and stewardship program).
