This is a a wonderful opportunity to help the Armed Services YMCA San Diego receive a very generous cash and in-kind donation of up to$100,000 from the Century Club of San Diego that will help deliver our programming and services for active duty military families. How? By donating some of your time to support the Breeders’ Cup the first week of November.
In the world of horse racing, the Breeders' Cup is the year-end international championship of the sport. In a nutshell, it is horse racing’s equivalent of the Super Bowl, and Del Mar was selected to host this year’s event. This is one of San Diego's preeminent sporting events with horses, jockeys, and spectators from around the world here to participate in and witness this spectacle. It's our opportunity for our community and our organization to shine before the world.
Normally, the Breeders’ Cup has a vehicle partner who provides VIP transportation to special guests of the Breeders’ Cup. Due to a shortage of vehicles they came to Century Club of San Diego for support after deciding to rent vehicles from Enterprise. The Century Club has turned to the Armed Services YMCA San Diego to help fill 703 volunteer driver openings throughout the week of 30 October - 7 November.
Volunteer drivers will drive VIPs between their hotels, the Del Mar race track, and various restaurants or other designated venues. Vehicles (large SUVs) will be provided by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Because these are rental cars, you must provide a copy of your driver's license so that Breeder's Cup can run a DMV background check for insurance purposes. (You must have a clean driving record to volunteer, e.g., no speeding tickets, no DUI, etc.).
Because of the size and high visibility of this event, we're counting on each volunteer who signs up to honor their volunteer commitment. For some of the assignments, even one volunteer missing their shift will cause substantial logistical issues.
When you sign up to volunteer, we will require that you provide to us:
- A copy of your full driver’s license showing all information on it.
- A copy of your COVID-19 vaccination card (you must be fully vaccinated by 15 OCT 2021).
- A signed copy of your completed "Breeders’ Cup Safe Driver Form."
You may email those documents within three business days of signing up to volunteer to us at dzeller@asymca.org or fax them to 619-532-6824. If you do not provide that information, you will not be able to volunteer.
The Breeders’ Cup has a policy that attendees-the passengers you will be driving-must show a negative COVID test within three days or proof of vaccination.
Volunteers who successfully complete two or more volunteer shifts will receive two tickets to the opening day of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January 2022.
