Take plywood and a box filled with items such as PVC pipe, screws and other hardware, an irrigation valve cover, piano wire, aluminum paint grid, a bicycle inner tube, a BRAIN (BEST Robotics Advanced Instruction Node programmable platform), and something called a micro-energy chain system and try, within six weeks, to design and build a functioning machine that can perform certain, specific tasks in three minutes. What do you get?

You get BEST, a middle and high school robotics competition whose mission is to engage and excite students about engineering, science, and technology as well as inspire them to pursue careers in these fields.

Through participation in our project-based STEM program, students learn to analyze and solve problems utilizing the Engineering Design Process, which helps them develop technological literacy skills. It is these skills that industry seeks in its workforce.

North Houston BEST competitions are possible only with the help of dedicated volunteers, like yourself, who donate their time and talent. During our event, volunteers interact with students, teachers, and parents. Our volunteers serve as role models and make the experience great for teams, and volunteers are inspired by the creativity and energy of the interactions. No prior experience with robotics, science, engineering, or competitions is needed -- we have roles for professionals and enthusiasts with all backgrounds! Won't you consider volunteering with us this year?

Mission Statement

BEST is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization whose mission is to inspire students to pursue careers in engineering, science, and technology through participation in a sports-like, science and engineering-based robotics competition.

Description

North Houston BEST is one of the Houston, Texas area hubs of BEST Robotics, Inc. (BRI). BRI is a non-profit organization with several hubs throughout Texas and the United States, who organize a yearly engineering contest for high school students. The contest lasts 6 weeks and involves having the high school students design, build, then demonstrate a robotic machine to play a "game". We provide actual engineers from the local industry to act as coaches/mentors and guide the students in the engineering process, teaming and other business principles. However, our program is unique from others in that the students have the experience; coaches/mentors are there only to guide, not design and build. Our goal is to boost an awareness of science and technology studies early during the high school years. By doing this we can help to mold the engineers and scientists of our future.
