PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Career Planning and Learning Center (CPLC) is a computer lab-based education program. Learners will participate in a self-paced and project-based method of study. The computer lab will be equipped with education programming that will provide resources for basic computing and preparation to take the GED test. The computer lab will be staffed with volunteers who will support the study efforts of the learners.

Basic Computing will provide instruction on:

• Keyboarding
• Word processing
• Emailing
• Safe internet surfing and use
• Trouble shooting techniques
• Microsoft Office
• Games (created to teach computer use)

VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Mentors encourage and support the development of learners from beginning to finish.

• Seek to build a grace-oriented relationship that encourages the learner’s progress toward their goals.
• Assist learners in understanding their areas of need and provide connections to resources as they grow into new areas of opportunity.
• Encourage learner to fully engage the resources and supports available to ensure a well-rounded, fulfilling experience throughout the process.
• Follow and encourage your learner’s progress.

Qualities of a Mentor:

• Has desire to develop sound relationship with learner to orient them for success.
• Encouraging, resourceful, accommodating, and capable.
• Knowledgeable about the Career planning program and available resources.
• Willing to develop mentorship practices.
• Age 25 or older
