Literacy Together will collaborate with the Refugee Resettlement Program of Catholic Charities (Charlotte Diocese) to provide English language tutors for as many as 40 Afghan refugees that will be coming to Asheville in the near future.

If all parties are vaccinated, tutoring sessions can be held in person, and remote sessions may be an option as well. We would prefer volunteers that live in the Asheville area. About Literacy Together (formerly Literacy Council of Buncombe County)

31 College St., Building B. Suite 221, Asheville, NC 28801, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to transform lives and communities through the power of literacy. Our vision is a just and equitable community in which literacy is accessible and achievable for all.

Literacy Together teaches individuals basic reading, writing, math, and English language skills through individual and small group instruction by trained tutors. Students, young and old, gain self-confidence and develop self-sufficiency to transform their lives as individuals, parents/children, workers/students, and citizens.

Success comes from the trusted bond that develops between our instructors and our students. Literacy Together, a non-profit organization accredited by ProLiteracy America and serving the community since 1987, provides highly individualized tutoring to fit the needs of over 300 students in three programs - Adult Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and the Augustine Project.
