Food Rescue MAINE Volunteer
In 2015, a Mitchell Center multidisciplinary team identified eliminating food waste as the single most important issue to ensure a more sustainable waste system in Maine. Following the Mitchell Center research approach, Food Rescue MAINE worked with Maine’s major food businesses and organizations including retailers, distributors, farmers, manufacturers, hospitality, hospitals, schools, Congresswoman Pingree’s office, and others to identify stakeholder-driven food waste solutionsthat would deliver major economic, social and environmental benefits for Maine.
Food rescuers pick-up excess food from local food donors, including grocery stores, restaurants, corporate dining facilities, and other food providers, and deliver it to local social service agencies providing for the food insecure. Rescuers use their own vehicles and select times that are convenient for them to pick-up and drop-off the excess food. The process is quick, simple, and incredibly rewarding. About Food Rescue US
1127 High Ridge Rd, Suite 338, Stamford, CT 06905, US
Food Rescue US is committed to ending American food insecurity by directly transferring fresh, usable food that would have otherwise been thrown away from restaurants, grocers and other food industry sources to food insecure families throughout the U.S.
Food Rescue US exists as a platform for the rescue of healthy surplus food, to be direcctly transferred to those in need. Hunger is no longer just a challenge to the homeless and jobless, hunger happens near us; it happens to families we know, to people with jobs and homes who are trying desperately to make life work.
What Can We Do?
Join us! Become a food rescuer and help those in need in your own community!
This platform is a toolbox of information and we focus on training, technology, and coordination to make volunteering and donating as simple and effective as possible. We're not saying that ending unnecessary hunger in our communities will be easy, but we do believe it's simple and that all of our efforts when combined form something substantial. In this case, since we began, that is over 17 million meals delivered and 28 million pounds of food saved from landfill.
