This position contributes to SAAVI Services for the Blind’s mission to cultivate growth and opportunity for blind people through nonvisual skills training; gaining the knowledge that all challenges have solutions, and fostering self-efficacy, empowerment and confidence. This means that all hold a positive philosophy of blindness, and all contribute to the success of each student.


Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator

Location: Tucson

Job Type: Volunteer


Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Work collaboratively in a team to support student and agency success
  • Demonstrate respect and inclusion for all
  • Adhere to all timelines or develop reasonable alternate plans for accomplishing job tasks
  • Positively represent SAAVI in professional development and special functions as needed
  • Use a variety of tools and techniques to adapt common games for nonvisual use

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to demonstrate a positive philosophy of blindness and a history of inclusive practices.
  • Excellent communication and the ability to demonstrate emotional intelligence
  • Experience advocating for individuals and encouraging self-advocacy
  • Ability to communicate, promote, and work within a team environment
  • Ability to initiate and complete job duties with strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent working knowledge of braille and assistive technology during interview

Conditions of employment:

  • Must demonstrate a positive philosophy of blindness
  • Must complete internal blindness immersion training
  • Must pass a Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) background check
  • Can be long term or one time assignment

Description

Saavi Services for the Blind is a blindness rehabilitation training center; providing skills training in nonvisual techniques to people of all ages.

Whether a student is new to blindness or has received training in the past and would like to learn new skills, our goal is to provide skills training so our students may lead productive, independent lives. Our programs serve a variety of individuals of all ages, from children to seniors, all with the goal of providing confidence and skill-building opportunities through training and education.

By participating in our programs, our students can gain the confidence and skills that allow them to return to the workforce, pursue secondary education, or begin the path towards a new career.

Saavi believes in a world where blind individuals are determined, bold, and self-reliant - contributing locally, nationally, and throughout the world. It’s not what you can see that matters; it’s what you can do!
