Join our community-based one-on-one mentoring program launching in October 2021 focused on youth 12 and up who are most at risk of aging out of the foster care system. The mentor will help develop the youth's short and long-term goals for education, finances, and careers and serve as an overall constant presence in the youth's life.

All mentors will complete applications, interviews, and background checks and participate in a training program before being matched with a youth. Mentors will receive a minimum of 6 hours of training, to include: a focus on the needs and challenges of youth in foster care, understanding of strategies for navigating the stages of a relationship; how to create a supportive environment through positive communication skills, development of growth mindset and developing and maintaining healthy boundaries. Mentors will be asked for a minimum commitment of one year.

Youth and mentors will meet a minimum of once a week. The Adoption Center Program Coordinator will provide bi-weekly check-ins with the mentors, youth, and caregivers and check-in monthly with the youth's social workers. On-going support, resources, and training will also be made available. Each quarter, the Center will hold group workshops where all the mentors and youth can come together and participate in a fun activity while getting to know each other.

About ADOPTION CENTER

Location:

Mission Statement

The Adoption Center creates permanent environments for children in foster care through public awareness, advocacy and family finding.

Description

The Center was founded in 1972 by an adoptive mother who saw firsthand the impact a stable family has on a child's well-being. Since then, we have become a leader in recruiting potential parents, and connecting them to children in need of a home, helping to create more than 24,000 families.

The Center's goals include:

  1. Increasing awareness about children awaiting adoption and the foster care system;
  2. Recruiting and retain families who want to open their homes and hearts to children;
  3. Educating families about the adoption process to make it as manageable and stress-free as possible;
  4. Increasing the number of adoptions for children in foster care who need additional resources; and
  5. Finding support systems for children who age out of foster care.
