ORGANIZATION: New York Common Pantry

Volunteer UNpacking Produce

In November, New York Common Pantry will need all the extra help it can get to pack healthy and nutritious packages of fresh produce, shelf-stable foods and Thanksgiving fixings. We’re sending our clients home with everything they need to cook a Thanksgiving meal to be remembered for years to come. You can help by arranging these packages for distribution. Volunteers are called upon to assemble packages of produce and shelf-stable items for our clients who are all experiencing food insecurity.

Volunteers are all required to sanitize, and wear masks and gloves, which we can provide if necessary. We have a hand-sanitizing station in the Pantry, and ask that you be able to stand on your feet for 3.5 hours, handling 30lb bags of groceries.

We’re operating on two shifts daily:
Morning (9:00am - 12:30pm)
Afternoon (12:30pm - 4:00pm)

For each shift, we are asking for up to 20 volunteers to perform the aforementioned tasks both inside the pantry and outside, to distribute these meals in Harlem (8 East 109th Street). All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, and show proof of COVID vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours of your shift.

Volunteers are integral to our programs. Please know that when you confirm the shift you would like to sign up for, you are making a commitment to supplying New York Common Pantry with a team of volunteers.

This year, more than ever, the mission needs its champions. As Thanksgiving approaches, we turn to you and ask you to support New York Common Pantry in its efforts. Won’t you please join us in ensuring that the city’s food-insecure families have a nutritious meal this Thanksgiving? Your volunteerism will go a long way in achieving that goal this year.

About New York Common Pantry

Location:

8 East 109th Street, New York, NY 10029, US

Mission Statement

The New York Common Pantry is dedicated to reducing hunger throughout New York City while promoting dignity and self-sufficiency.

Description

New York Common Pantry works toward the reduction of hunger and food insecurity through an array of programs that function to establish long-term independence for those we serve. Our whole-person approach starts with food provision through the distribution of nutritious, fresh food pantry packages in Choice Pantry and hearty balanced breakfast and dinner in the Hot Meals program. Supplemental food is provided to seniors aged 60 and older through Nourish.

We then go further to address the reasons for food insecurity with case management services through the help of Help 365, which assists Pantry visitors in gaining access to resources, and Project Dignity, which connects homeless visitors to resources. The third vital element in our whole-person approach is education offered through our Live Healthy! program. Live Healthy! teaches children and adults about the importance of a nutritionally sound diet and active living, as well as provides them with the skills necessary to make healthier choices for their families.
