Do you enjoy learning new things and sharing your knowledge? You might be a great fit for the International Quilt Museum’s volunteer docent team!
Docents provide tours of exhibitions to audiences of all ages and backgrounds, including both public and school audiences, and help the museum provide consistent and quality community education opportunities. We are especially looking for volunteer who enjoy interacting with and teaching children to join our field trip tour team.These positions require strong communication skills. Docents will receive a sneak peek of new exhibitions and specific exhibition-related training directly from the museum’s curators when new exhibitions open, in addition to other training opportunities throughout the year. Tours are scheduled between 10:00 AM and Noon, Tuesday-Saturday, with public tours generally taking place at 11:00 AM year round, and field trip tours taking place at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM between November and March. Each tour is between 45 minutes and 1 hour in length.

Description
The International Quilt Museum is located on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus at 33rd and Holdrege streets. The museum has the world's largest publicly held quilt collection, dating from the early 1700s to present and representing more than 60 countries. Diversity and inclusion are central to the University’s and the IQM’s mission and pursuit of excellence. Each person has something to gain from and offer to our community of learning, discovery and outreach. All are welcome here. We hold memberships with the American Alliance of Museums and Association of Academic Museums and Galleries. We enjoy a partnership with the North American Reciprocal Museum Association (NARM) and Blue Star Museums, honoring active members of our military and their families with free admission between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

- Orientation or Training
- One hour per shift. Trainings generally occur in the spring and fall for about one hour; there are about 10 trainings spread out throughout the year for new exhibitions.
- These positions require strong communication and interpersonal skills. Volunteer docents should be comfortable working independently and interacting with the public, including visitors of all ages from many cultures around the world.
