Mission Statement

To increase capacity for intercultural understanding, build diverse community connections and grow compassionate leaders, through the ancient art of storytelling. We envision a world where human connectedness is sought and celebrated by lifting up cultural and individual identity and voice, resulting in a deeper understanding and appreciation of ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Description

WithOurVoice, Inc. oversees two Capital Region programs. In the Children at the Well (C@W) program, young people (12 years and up) from different traditions learn a variety of forms of storytelling together. They choose or create stories to tell that they feel a deep connection to and want to share with others, thereby exploring many of the wells of wisdom found in every culture, and developing their voice. As they become proficient storytellers, they have opportunities to present to audiences of all sizes, gaining confidence in delivering their message. This draws family members, friends, and neighbors into the program in a variety of ways and it becomes intergenerational. The increased capacity for inclusive, respectful, and creative discourse strengthens the next generation of community leaders.

The Interfaith Story Circle began in 1993 and continues to offer informal and open monthly story circles, hosted by a new Capital Region community each time, in which everyone is free to share a story from the heart. Since March 2020, they have been holding story circles via Zoom and their scope has extended beyond the area. There is always a theme to the evening with a guest storyteller to introduce the theme and lead off for the first half hour or so. Stories can be traditional, personal, rehearsed or spontaneously told. We are always seeking new individuals and groups with whom we can share.
