In response to economic impact of COVID-19 on families in East Bakersfield, Children First has organized a monthly food distribution for the last year at the David Nelson Pocket Park-1511 Niles Street.

Children First is seeking volunteers to help (1) assemble food boxes; (2) distribute boxes to families in a drive-thru experience; and (3) cleanup the park after the distribution is completed.

Mission Statement

Children First Inc.’s mission is to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty by seeking out opportunities for East Bakersfield children and families to thrive in school, home, work, neighborhoods, and life.

Description

We believe that all Bakersfield children deserve an opportunity to succeed in life. Our goals are to create prosperous communities; ensure that all Bakersfield children live in healthy, safe, and nurturing neighborhoods that promote academic achievement and success; and to counter the negative influences of drugs, crime, violence, and poverty. In order to do this, Children First Campaign believes we must invest in our community assets - not dwell on the deficits -of a neighborhood to create long-lasting improvements and growth. We also believe that a community’s best assets are the families who live within that community. By investing in families, encouraging them to take responsibility for their own futures, we will transform the community.

Since 2010, the 100% volunteer-led organization has worked to bring new resources to children and families of East Bakersfield, including tutoring and mentoring programs, community health events, food distributions, neighborhood cleanup days, desk and computer distributions, Christmas toy giveaways, and summer field trips. Our accomplishments also included the construction of the David Nelson Pocket Park- a private park dedicated to the children of East Bakersfield.
