The Urbana Youth Center is an after-school hangout space for students grades 6-12 living in the Urbana School District. Our mission is to provide comprehensive youth services to reach, restore, and revive our community. We are open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2PM-8PM and offer free after-school transportation for students. Tutoring, books, games, and scheduled programs are just a few of the numerous activities we offer our students. Supper is provided for both students and volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday night.

*Summer hours will vary. Please contact Facilities Manager Amber Landis for details.*

Volunteers assisting during student hours are trained to engage with the students while also monitoring the students for any misbehavior that requires immediate action. Volunteers are also welcome to assist during our office hours with tasks such as cleaning, restocking the food pantry, and setting up programs. All volunteers are required to go through a background check and orientation process before they start volunteer training.

Mission Statement

With open hearts and open minds, UYC & our community can rally our resources to not only lift kids up, but set them on a trajectory for accomplishing amazing things. Remember, the future of our children impacts our community’s opportunities and success for decades to come. Together we can build bright futures for our youth. This is a movement. Whether you’re most comfortable contributing time to help achieve our program goals, money to help us grow, or energy to drive this engine of change, we need you on our team. Together we can build bright futures for our youth. "Without the support of the community, open minds, and a willingness to explore the opportunities before us, this inspiring project would not be possible." -- Justin T. Weller, Lead Project Manager Motto: Open hearts, open minds and open doors. Take action now!

Description

We open the door to students and provide them a safe place to hang out, have fun, study, play games, participate in programs such as arts, crafts, movement, music, essential life skills and much more. We also have free tutoring, meals, snacks, personal hygiene products & laundry services. As they come to experience a sense of belonging at the UYC, we then have the opportunity to open their minds to new programs that improve not only educational outcomes but set them on a trajectory to be engaged members of this community. Ultimately, that’s how we achieve open hearts, open minds and open doors. That is the opportunity before us.
A "non-profit organization that is an 8,000-square-foot facility, to be used free to students in grades 6-12 in the Urbana City Schools. Youths in that age group who live in the Urbana City Schools geographic area but do not attend the city schools are also included in the population.
