We're always looking for guest musicians and singers to make music with our seniors. Music Mends Minds offers free tri-weekly musical Zoom sessions, which are led by a board-certified music therapist and feature a mix of sing-alongs, solos and guest performers. We meet Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11:30am-12:30pm PT.

Music Mends Minds is a nonprofit that creates musical support groups, bands and sing-a-longs for patients with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, as well as traumatic brain injury, stroke. Research shows that music memory remains intact in these patients, in spite of the disease process, offering a beneficial and therapeutic experience for our members, families, caregivers and the community.

Mission Statement

Music Mends Minds is a nonprofit that creates musical support groups for individuals with Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinson's, traumatic brain injury, PTSD and other neurological disorders. Our bands and sing-alongs foster communities among those afflicted and their families, friends, volunteers and caregivers, all of whom thrive on socialization and music making. We educate our community about the latest scientific findings about the benefits of music and the brain.

Description

Music Mends Minds was founded in 2014 by Carol Rosenstein to help her husband Irwin, who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and dementia. After years of watching him gradually slip away, Carol enrolled Irwin in the UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Patient Care Program. While he was playing the piano for parents and students in the program, it became clear that the music empowered him. Irwin became more aware, responsive, confident, energetic, talkative, and hopeful. After witnessing this dramatic transformation in Irwin’s condition Carol was inspired to start a band to help others with neurodegenerative diseases and The 5th Dementia was born. Since then MMM has grown to 20 bands nationally and hosted 24 concerts. During Covid, MMM expanded globally by creating a Zoom platform that meets tri-weekly led by a board-certified music therapist. Our pivot to a virtual platform has provided a critical lifeline for seniors who were severely isolated during Covid. Our triweekly sessions provide a therapeutic activity, a social component and relief for caregivers.
