The Backside Learning Center is in search of a qualified candidate to gain valuable experience in the area of early childhood development. This internship is specifically built around providing parent support which involves assisting in the facilitation of a series of workshops.

Responsibilities:

The typical duties of the Early Childhood and Parent Engagement intern include but are not limited to:

  • Help staff plan and organize the Parent Support Group/LENA
    • Help prepare materials.
  • Communicate with parents in the group to coordinate scheduling and solicit feedback about the group.
  • Help attendees fill out paperwork at the start of the group.
  • Staff the weekly workshops (usually take place in the afternoons)
    • Prepare food, oversee program and provide support throughout, oversee childcare, help with clean up.

Description

The Backside Learning Center provides free educational services to the men and women who work with the thoroughberd horses in the barn area, or backside, of Churchill Downs and Trackside in Louisville, KY. Our programming includes English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL), technology workshops, citizenship tutoring, art class, and music class. All of our classes & tutoring depend on volunteers. Family Education Program focusing on afterschool homework assistance for equine workers' children,

Note: BLC hours are between 9:00 am-8:00 pm Monday thru Friday. Days, times and frequency of direct service will fall between these hours but will depend upon the work schedule and availability of students and volunteers.
