Remote support for hospice patients and their caregivers
Veterans, professionals, students, homemakers, those who have had family and friends on hospice - Amedisys has a place for volunteers from all walks of life.
All of our volunteers provide comfort and support that is immeasurable to the patients and families facing a terminal diagnosis. Whether the volunteer relationship lasts days, weeks, or months, it is long remembered by both sides of the equation.
This is so even with Covid restrictions remaining in place and little opportunity for in-person volunteering. It is now that hearing the voice of our volunteers on the phone is all the more impactful.
There are no cold calls to patients. Volunteer services are offered at the time of admittance and only provided to those who choose them. Volunteers are matched with patients according to compatibility.
As for our veteran volunteers, they have continued to be afforded a chance for direct visits through the We Honor Veterans program. Having a fellow veteran there as we thank and honor our veteran hospice patients has always been a very special addition to the program. The veteran patients and their family members welcome us into their homes to present their service member with a certificate and pin in gratitude of their service. These framed certificates are always on display when medical staff make subsequent visits.
Professional services are also a welcome addition to our team. Volunteers with certifications in pet therapy, hair dressing, massage therapy, and the like have the ability to bring a sense of normalcy to those who are no longer ambulatory.
High school and college students who need to fulfill required volunteer hours for graduation leave the Amedisys volunteer program with more than just hours fulfilled. They receive skills in phone etiquette, public speaking, administrative work, and more. Many of these students find themselves choosing to stay on long after these hours have been met.
There too will always be a special place on our volunteer team for homemakers and retirees who bring with them the gift of time and knowledge. Their contribution to making patients and caregivers feel less alone is immeasurable.
And lastly, we welcome those who have experienced hospice personally through the loss of a family member or friend. It is you who have an unparalleled understand of the difference hospice can make. You know the importance of having someone to talk to either as a distraction or to lend support. Being that person for someone else is the ultimate selfless act.
We hope that you see yourself in one of these descriptions and find it in your heart to enhance the end of life journey for another.
As a Medicare provider we fall under the federal Covid-19 vaccination mandate. All employees and volunteers of Amedisys Hospice must be fully vaccinated.
Employees and volunteers who spend time in our office, and/or in-person with patients, are required to wear medical-grade face masks. These will be provided as necessary.
A 6-feet distance is adhered to when meeting face-to-face both in and out of the office when representing Amedisys Hospice.
The minimum age to volunteer with Amedisys is 18 unless parental consent is provided.
Although this is a remote opportunity we are seeking volunteers from southwestern Pennsylvania.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.
