The Office of Assemblymember Zohran K. Mamdani is looking for volunteers with foreign language skills to provide assistance to non-English speaking individuals to receive public benefits and relief from Storm Ida. While all language skills are helpful, we are particularly looking for Individuals who speak Spanish, Bangla, Greek, Arabic and Chinese to volunteer.
Volunteer activities include:
Constituent Services
Like most legislative offices, we have staff who offer constituent services. We work one-on-one with constituents who need help accessing services, solving problems related to city or state government, or navigating thorny bureaucratic issues. The focus of this work is on meeting immediate needs. Constituent services are a direct line to understanding the needs and issues that our neighbors face and serves as a foundation for our legislation, our organizing efforts, and understanding how we can leverage our office to meet the needs of our community. We are developing a growing team of volunteers to help us do this work and need your help to serve our neighbors with limited or no English fluency.
Outreach
Our office also conducts outreach to inform our neighbors of government programs and social services programs such as the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, the Excluded Workers Fund, and unemployment benefits. Some of this outreach is through translated digital and physical materials. We also have in-person opportunities for those who have speaking fluency.
Whether you are interested in translating written texts, doing in-person outreach, or interpreting for specific constituent services cases, there are engaging projects available to suit all interests. The only requisite: a desire to incorporate interpretation/translation in helping others!
Requirements :
- Fluency or near fluency in English and another language, particularly Bangla, Spanish, Greek, Arabic and Chinese
- Ability to translate to and from English and another language; to be clear, professional experience with translating and/or interpreting is not a requisite!
- Ability to provide a minimum of 4 hours a month (this volunteer work is very flexible and can be done remotely or in-person, depending on your preferences)
Please fill out this survey to tell us a bit about your language capacity and interest: https://airtable.com/shrUexgoZwesm6iGl

About Assemblymember Zohran K. Mamdani District Office
Location:
24-08 32nd Street, Suite 1002A, Astoria, NY 11103, US
Mission Statement
The Office of Assembly Member Zohran Kwame Mamdani is fighting for a future in which each and every New Yorker lives a dignified life and where the distribution of that dignity is not determined by the market. At a time when almost a quarter of our neighbors across Astoria spend half their income on rent, when they breathe the most polluted air in Queens, and where they are profiled at the highest rates of any neighborhood in the borough, we believe that the future we deserve is one where housing, energy, and justice are for the many, not just the few. This vision informs our legislative advocacy and priorities, our constituent services and our community organizing in AD 36.
Description
Our office is broken up into five main branches: constituent services, legislative, organizing, outreach, and communications.
In the NYS Assembly, we legislate to bring dignity to all New Yorkers. Our legislative work is an avenue for long-term and wide-spread change. Our office also conducts outreach to inform our neighbors of government programs and social services programs such as the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, the Excluded Workers Fund, and unemployment benefits. Through our communications, we work to demystify thorny govt bureaucracy and to make transparent the work that we do both in Albany and in our district. We organize with our neighbors to bring dignity to all in Astoria, leading efforts such as a district-wide meal distribution during Ramadan and organizing tenants in large buildings in the district.
