ANIMAL CARE
Elephant Crew
Volunteers in this position will help out with cleaning, diet prep, habitat setup, enrichment and more in the Elephant Department! This position requires an active volunteer who can commit to one shift per week. Please reach out to Volunteer Services Staff if interested in this position.
Africa Crew

Barn Crew
Volunteers in this position will help out with cleaning, diet prep, habitat setup, enrichment and more in the Children’s Zoo/Alabama Wilds Department! This position requires an active volunteer who can commit to one shift per week. Please reach out to Volunteer Services Staff if interested in this position.
ANC Crew
The Birmingham Zoo’s Animal Nutrition Center (ANC) is home to the zoos nutrition team. It requires a lot of work to keep over 600 animals feed, healthy, and happy here at the zoo and the ANC team needs a little bit of help. ATTN: Please note that this position will not have direct contact with any of the animals. The duties would include:
Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter Volunteer (Seasonal)
Volunteers in this position will help out with our seasonal giraffe feeding by making sure guests and animals are as safe as possible. Volunteers will work in one of 3 positions; the exit gate, entrance gate, or the primary feeder. Each position attending to a different part of the experience.
Lorikeet Aviary Volunteer (Seasonal)
Volunteers in this position will help out with our seasonal lorikeet aviary by making sure guests and animals are as safe as possible. Volunteers will aid inside the aviary so be sure that you are a bird fan before choosing this position!
Barn Ambassador
Volunteers in this position will help assure that guests in the Children’s Zoo Barn have the best experience possible while also treating our animals with respect. Volunteers in this area will have a good knowledge about our barn animals, how brushing and petting should be done, and safely protocols.

Not-for-profit zoo focused on conservation, education, and the well-being of living things. We ask for $50.00 for adults and $50.00 for teens at the orientations to help us with the cost of a criminal background check (all volunteers and employees must have a check) and ID badge, t-shirt and to offset the cost of annual appreciation events. We offer free training for volunteers and provide discounts in the gift shop and food courts.
