During this trying time, so many people have to do more while feeling trapped receiving less. Less time, less funds, less family support. One of the mental health coping methods highly recommended to people during the pandemic was to take walks outside. In neighborhoods with sidewalks or walking trails nearby, this has been possible. Others that lack sidewalks or walking trails make a walk in nature unachievable. This is an example of how city planning and greenspace management or neglect can be an issue of environmental justice.
The Gregory Ridge Neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, did not have sidewalks or a walking trail, until 2018. Clement Waters Retreat acquired a 4-acre forested thicket and recruited over 500 volunteers to form walking trails throughout, providing exercise and mind-clearing recreation for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Then the pandemic hit. Walkers still utilized the trail, but large groups of volunteers sank to a bare minimum. The volunteer groups are coming back on October 16th, but first we need help assessing what needs to be on the to-do list for trail restoration.
Thank you for your willingness to come share your assessment of what factors are top priority, and to lend a helping hand if there are small tasks that can be accomplished together after the assessment. Your efforts establish more air-cleaning oxygen rich spots in Kansas City's urban core, where vulnerable populations are affected most by climate change. #ClimateActionWeek
