Fair Housing Law Project

Federal and state laws prohibit housing discrimination on the basis of race or color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, family status, marital status, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, source of income, and others.

The GBLA Fair Housing Law Project provides fair housing education, investigation, and enforcement services for Kern County residents, regardless of income, who believe they have been victims of illegal housing discrimination. When fair housing investigations yield evidence of illegal discrimination, the Project can assist and represent victims in administrative agency complaints or lawsuits.

Volunteer with us!

Volunteer Fair Housing Testers are key participants in fair housing investigations and enforcement. Volunteer testers are trained to observe and report on practices of apartment managers, real estate agents, and others involved in housing rentals. Activities include on-site tests, telephone tests, and resident surveys to gather information. GBLA Fair Housing Law Project (FHLP) staff evaluate this information to determine if housing providers are complying with federal and state fair housing laws.

Volunteers receive a $25, $50, or $75 stipend for each completed fair housing tests.

Please Note: This is a volunteer position with testing opportunities assigned as needed. FHLP cannot guarantee that you will be assigned testing opportunities or estimate how often you will be asked to assist in investigations.
