The Pitch
Has a powerful story ever changed your perspective or understanding? We create theatre to open hearts and minds in powerful ways, and to move toward a better future. AFT board members can help amplify the most underrepresented voices in our LGBTQIA+ community, provide opportunities for professional artists, and create brave spaces for youth to explore creativity, leadership, and social change. This has been life-changing and life-saving for many.
Programs
AFT is proud of its nationally acclaimed and award winning programs. Our annual season includes at least three professional productions including union affiliated shows and the Youth Theatre show (all premiering at The Den Theatre, 1331 N Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago), and opportunities for new play development. AFT's year-round Education Programs are for youth ages 12-24 and include: (a) free workshops and the development and performance of a fully staged original production created by the ensemble and professional adult artists; (b) a skill and leadership develop program with paid positions to obtain NFP operational experience; (c) virtual and touring community engagement programs for schools and other institutions to guide conversations about gender, sexuality, intersecting identities, and how to become a better ally.
Could be a good fit for a board candidate who embodies the following
We seek members who are passionate about the mission, support LBGTQIA+ issues, believe in the power of theatre, and who are motivated to serve a community. We seek members who bring joy and positivity along with professional skills, strong networks, and a readiness to raise resources and build connections. We seek leaders, creative thinkers, problem-solvers, self-starters and reliable colleagues with strong execution and follow-through tendencies. We care about equity and social justice, and seek members who will serve AFT’s mission in alignment with our values. Skills of all kinds welcomed (fundraising/development, HR, strategic planning, finance, marketing, special events, NFP/arts/theatre/education/youth sector experiences). We are also looking for an individual who could serve as the next board treasurer.
Commitments of Time, Talent and Treasure
As an arts organization, members are encouraged to find creative ways to leverage their time and talents to support AFT’s mission and strategic goals, and to connect AFT with resources, opportunities and communities. There is no defined financial requirement for a seat on the board, but members are expected to make an annual contribution that is personally significant, and the board’s total pledged gifts are reflected in the annual budget as a portion of the expected contributed revenue.
