ARM is supporting The Salvation Army in its efforts to bring comfort and connection to the street homeless of Newark.

Don't Walk By Newark is a massive one-day event geared toward serving our neighbors who are experiencing chronic street homelessness. We hope not only to meet immediate needs by providing food and basic necessities like hygiene items and clothing - but also to connect individuals to stabilizing services like detox, housing resources, case management, and much more.

TSA's goal with Don’t Walk By is to affirm the humanity and dignity of those who are too often ignored, mistreated, abused, and neglected."

Volunteer Opportunities are broken into two Teams..

The Street Team is responsible for greeting, engaging, and transporting guests to the hub. Ideal volunteers for this team are courteous, charming, and peaceable. Volunteers on this team may be assigned to any of the following crews:

  1. Engagement - Engagement crews travel through Newark in teams of 5 (1 Captain and 4 volunteers) in search of new friends and neighbors experiencing homelessness. The goal of an engagement crew is to make genuine frontline connections with guests and encourage their consent to join us at the hub
  2. Chauffeur - Chauffeurs operate in co-pilot pairs and do exactly what their name suggests, work with Engagement crews to bring guests to the Hub and back when they are ready. Chauffeurs do not use their own vehicles and are only Salvation Army and City Relief staff, volunteers are welcome to apply as Co-Pilots. The goal of a Chauffeur duo is to offer a pleasant travel experience for guests, including engaging conversation.
  3. Logistics - logistics crews are the heartbeat of the street effort. Logistics crews conduct safety check-ins with Engagement & Chauffer crews, coordinate the safe transport of volunteers and guests to and from the hub, organize partnered services and review incoming intake data for any needs or calls for resources. The goal of the logistics crew is to ensure our partners, guests, and volunteers are inspired, supplied, and supported.

The On-site Team is responsible for coordinating, serving, and overseeing the guest's experience at the hub. Ideal volunteers for this team are organized, critical thinkers, and comfortable with a little chaos. Volunteers on this team are also the most nimble and will be assigned their specific role approximately 1 week out from the event, once our total attendance is confirmed. Below is a list of some roles and responsibilities an On-site volunteer may be conducting during the event. Generally, these roles are similar to the roles you would find at a hotel, spa, or restaurant and deploy skills you likely already have exposure to. Don't worry if any of these tasks seem intimidating, you'll receive training and operate in teams with an experienced Captain!

Front of House or Guest Facing Roles Include:

  1. Checkin/ Welcome Desk/Intake
  2. Food Service
  3. Scheduling
  4. Help Kiosk/Partnered Services
  5. Table Hosts
  6. Table Runners

Back of House or Operations Roles Include:

Mission Statement

ARM provides much needed personal hygiene and human services to homeless people in Middlesex County with the goal of raising each person's self-esteem and ultimately his/her quality of life.

Description

ARM was born out of a push to do more. Most of our founders were Rutgers University Alumni and we often found that student engagement was limited to very scripted activities that treat philanthropy as a reactive rather than a proactive endeavor. We were tired of doing the least we could do, so we fixed that. ARM currently operates several events a year that focus on putting the wonderful private institutions that make New Brunswick and Middlesex County unique back to the service of its citizens. Oh, and did we mention, we want to retrofit a metro bus to bring free showers and connect service providers to guests! #JointheARMy and let's fight to make our community a little better, together.
