ORGANIZATION: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide

Your leadership skills can help community members claim larger Tax Refunds!

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free personal income tax counseling and tax preparation to middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 50 and older. The McKinleyville Senior Center Location Coordinator provides 1 st line leadership implementing Tax-Aide programs and policies with a small team (currently 4 volunteers), one of two AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites in Humboldt County CA.

The Location Coordinator (LC) manages volunteers to deliver program services to Taxpayers, while complying with Tax-Aide policies & IRS Quality Site Requirements at one or more Sites within a District. LCs are the focal point for working with Site providers, managing the Tax-Aide presence at assigned Sites, ensuring the smooth flow of Taxpayers through the intake and preparation process, and resolving issues that may arise while providing services or after filing returns. A District Management Team provides Training for volunteers plus assistance with Technology and Administration supports the Location Coordinator. Second and third level support is provided for these functions at the State and National levels.

Familiarity with income tax law and processes is very helpful but not required, Location Coordinators may choose, but are not expected to prepare taxes. The LC need not be an IRS-certified Counselor unless they choose to also volunteer in a Counselor role preparing taxes.

Time commitment varies by the number of sites and volunteers managed. The position requires the most time from October through May, starting with Season planning and training in the Fall thru January; then actively managing the assigned site throughout the season (February to mid-April), then wrap-up reporting after April 15 th . LCs are the focal point for resolution of typically very infrequent Taxpayer questions or issues with the returns prepared at their site(s) during the off-season.

Our service is completely free and open to people of any age. Volunteers receive hands-on training in tax preparation and are IRS certified. Whether you join us as a volunteer or take advantage of our tax preparation services, you will encounter a friendly, helpful, knowledgable, enthusiastic and highly functioning team of people.
