This position provides the opportunity for airplane buffs to participate in restoring aircraft stricken from service to full static (non-flying) status. A rewarding experience!
Airwing/Aircraft Restoration volunteers are responsible for the fabrication, installation, and repair of aircraft components. Learn more about the position here.
Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes
Time Commitment: A commitment of at least 10 hours per month is necessary to start and stay current. Work hours are: 8:00am - 2:00pm on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with other days available upon approval.
Required Skills/Experience: Volunteers should be experienced aircraft metal workers, painters, bodyworkers, or novices with mechanical aptitude. Volunteers must have pre-existing access to Naval Air Station North Island.
Training Provided: All volunteers must complete an initial orientation with the Airwing department.
Physical Requirements: This opportunity requres climbing on stands, ladders and aircraft as well as lifting up to 20 pounds.

Description
The USS Midway Museum opened to the public in June 2004 and today is one of San Diego’s most popular visitor attractions with world wide audience. The naval aircraft carrier was commissioned in 1945 and served for 47 years supporting U.S. military and humanitarian efforts around the world. Nearly 250,000 sailors and officers served their country aboard the USS Midway before it was decommissioned (retired) in 1992. Museum includes more than 60 audio tour stops including nearly 30 aircraft ranging from the WWII era to today's technology in Naval aviation. Come be a part of this 'city at sea'!
