Current: This youth is a 17-year-old from Guatemala who has been in the United States since January of 2020. She currently lives at Bethany’s girls group home in Kentwood and is an 11th grader at her local public school. A foster home or semi-independent living placement is currently being sought for her, as she has graduated from the group home program. During her time at the group home, she has not had behavioral concerns and got along with other residents. She has a few close friends and a boyfriend in the community. She has been very respectful to staff and advocated well for her needs. She enjoys activities and being active, but also really enjoys staying in her room, watching movies and spending time at home. She is a calm, caring and introverted individual. She enjoys listening to music, being active outside by walking or playing soccer, and enjoys doing her make-up. She is a Protestant Christian and enjoys going to church.

In her mentoring survey the youth shared that she is shy at first but talkative when comfortable. She prefers going out to staying. Activities that she enjoys include soccer, shopping, games, having, and getting her nails done. She is currently interested in becoming a police officer or a border patrol agent. She would like to be paired with a Spanish-speaking woman, and mentoring activities she is interested include exploring the city, working on homework, learning new skills, outdoor activities, sports, cooking or baking, going to concerts or plays, and learning about college and career opportunities.

Background: This youth fled Guatemala due to ongoing familial abuse and gang violence.

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
