When the school bell rings at the end of the day, thousands of kids across metro Des Moines pour out of classrooms and move on to their after-school routines. For some, this means heading home where they are met by a parent who helps them with homework before driving them to football practice.

For others, after-school options are far less certain, stable, and safe. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa, we provide safety and support during critical hours of the day as well as meals, strong role models, organized athletics, and access to the arts.

As one of the most well-known and respected youth organizations in the country, Boys & Girls Clubs of America provides young people with opportunities to engage in programs that help them achieve academic success, take charge of their well-being by building healthy habits that will stick with them throughout their lives, and foster the skills they need to become leaders in their communities.

Since 1963, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa has supported Des Moines metro kids and families when they need us most: after school, all day in the summer, and even during the school day. Our strategic programming and supportive staff mentors help inspire and enable all young people who walk through our doors.

When school is out, our eight Club sites are in. We provide high-quality programs in a safe environment, with caring staff and volunteers dedicated to serving as positive role models. Our Club members can overcome barriers to success because we are willing to do whatever it takes to help them achieve great futures.

We ensure that every child who walks through our Club doors has his or her basic needs met. By collaborating with families, schools, and partners in the community, Clubs provide children a safe space, an environment to learn and grow, and meals.

Our Club Volunteers assist our Club staff with general needs such as coordinating games and crafts, playing sports, assisting with homework, front desk duties, and more! Shifts are available Monday - Friday anytime from 3pm - 7pm. Please contact Jessica Louis at jlouis@bgcci.org to find out if this opportunity is right for you!

Description

For the past 50 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa has provided kids and teens with research-based programs that focus on education, healthy lifestyles, and character and leadership development. Today, we serve more than 2,000 central Iowa youth ages 5-18 from 44 local schools each year (500 kids a day). We offer hands-on educational and experiential enrichment every day after school, as well as all-day programming during the summer and other breaks. The Club is a safe setting where youth can participate in both supervised and self-directed activities designed to give them the developmental assets necessary in becoming successful adults. Homework help, leadership opportunities, computer access, and a plethora of age-appropriate activities are offered at Club every day. Our youth development strategy is to instill a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and influence in the young people we serve.
