ORGANIZATION: Alameda County Community Food Bank

Come join a team of volunteers sorting and boxing farm-fresh produce at an outdoor, drive-through food distribution. You’ll be making a huge impact, helping to create food boxes and load them into vehicles for families throughout Alameda County.

We are seeking volunteers (age 18+) who can commit to joining us for at least one full day (8am-1:30pm) for at least 4 weeks.

Spanish speakers are highly sought after for this site, to help communicate with clients driving through in their vehicles.

Due to the work involved in our emergency response, we ask that volunteers are able to:

  • Stand for up to 3 hours at a time doing repetitive motions.
  • Able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Be prepared for cool mornings and warm afternoons - you'll be outside.

This is a team environment where you will be working with up to 34 other people each day, plus the hundreds of clients attending the distribution.

Description

Founded in 1985, the Food Bank's primary purpose is to collect and distribute nutritious food to Alameda County's low income residents. The Food Bank accomplishes this through its network of 300 hunger relief agencies which includes food pantries, soup kitchens, residential and day programs, shelters, and USDA distribution sites. In the 2010-11 Fiscal Year, the Alameda County Community Food Bank distributed over 20 million pounds of food to provide food assistance to 49,000 people in need each week.
