The Communications Volunteer is a critical position that supports Kid City’s programs through its work alongside the Administrative Coordinator in building and monitoring the Kid City and the Urban Foundation websites and donor databases that are hosted within the Nationbuilder platform.
Reports to: Communications Coordinator
Schedule: To be determined by the volunteer, Communications Coordinator, and the external agency providing the internship (if any). Ideally 7-10 hours per week.
Update website: Work alongside the staff to implement website changes and help maintain blogs. Responsibilities may include updating pages, copies, and photos, adding or removing pages, adding and updating staff and volunteer bios
Maintenance of donor/alumni data : Help maintain integrity and security of donor and alumni database within Nationbuilder
Provide Graphic Design Support: May include designing fliers and branded assets for social media
- Possess an empathetic understanding of students from various backgrounds including low-income & first-generation students
- Excellent technical skills and knowledge of web development tools (e.g. HTML, CSS, etc.)
- Knowledge of office applications such as: Google Docs, Google Drive and/or are open to learning new platforms
- Experience with Nationbuilder is recommended

The Urban Foundation has volunteer opportunities in several programs, including Kid City Hope Place, Kid City JW, Skid Row Ministry, and in our administrative office. Kid City provides youth leadership, academic enrichment, and college access programs to low-income youth in downtown LA. Please read further to see what most interests you!
Kid City is a youth leadership and college access program operating after-school and during school breaks. Open to all at no charge, most participants are first generation college or college-bound students from very low income families living in and around downtown Los Angeles, where we are located. Activities include mentoring for high school seniors, after-school tutoring in all subjects for middle and high school students, college completion support for college students, SAT study groups, field trips, music lessons and band for middle and high school students, and a variety of leadership activities, including job training.
