ORGANIZATION: STRAIGHT TALK SUPPORT GROUP

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 1 person is interested

The Volunteer Companion positions were created with the goal of connecting volunteers with residents during the weekend hours. The volunteers should use this time to engage with the residents in a positive environment. There are games that could be played, STSG has cards, dominoes, a basketball court, and board games that the volunteers could play with the residents. There is also a TV, and a DVD player as well if residents and volunteers wished to watch movies together. Volunteers could also sit and chat with residents on the porch. This position is a way for residents to get more connected in the community, with people they may not normally engage with otherwise.

All persons on-site are required to wear masks: staff, volunteers, and residents. Everyone practices social distancing as much as possible. Temperatures are checked upon entry to the house. Volunteers should expect to be asked if they are vaccinated.

Mission Statement

STSG's Mission is to be a voice of the community that listens, informs, supports and empowers families and friends of the incarcerated and returning citizens. We want to offer our residents at our transitional housing 360 degree care, that goes past providing housing, to help their reentry to society go as smoothly as possible.

Description

Straight Talk Support Group was founded in 2013 as a nonprofit focused on supporting those whose loved ones are currently or were previously incarcerated. The main program of STSG at that time was our support groups for those loved ones. in 2017, STSG became a transitional house for men who have been released from prison. Now with a contract with the Department of Public Safety, STSG has a capacity for up to 18 men. A typical length of stay at STSG is 120 days, with three different stages of programming. STSG is dedicated to provide 360 degree support to the residents of the transitional house. That means we connect them with physical and mental health providers, substance use counseling, education opportunities, life skills education and more. Our goal is to help residents develop a strong foundation of care so that when they do transition from the program, they have the skills to continue living a healthy and successful lifestyle.
