What is a certified Volunteer Guardian ad Litem (GAL)? A GAL is a certified volunteer appointed by the court to advocate and serve the best interest of children. In most cases, the children have been removed from the parents care (through no fault of their own) because of abuse, abandonment and/or neglect and have been placed in the dependency system. The GAL advocates for the child's best interest by providing recommendations to the court regarding services for the child, safety and emotional well being, educational needs and permanency.
