Social Support Volunteer - Volunteer Mentor Guide

ORGANIZATION: The NEST Collaborative

Through the COVID-19 crisis, several Nevadans were socially isolated and experiencing loneliness. The NEST Collaborative first considered homebound elders needing community resources. The NEST Collaborative now aims to continue to support any elders and adults living with disabilities across Nevada through several programs. The Guide opportunity serves as a mentor to a cohort of up to 12 Volunteers to provide excellent service to our Participants. Guides facilitate a weekly 30-minute huddle for their cohort to open a space for community-building, collaborative problem-solving, and the celebration of weekly successes. Guides work in pairs (as co-guides) as a primary resource at least once per day outside the cohort huddle for any volunteer questions and comments from their cohort. Many of our current Guides service in local aging- and social- services agencies or are experience volunteers and professionals in related fields.

Training is conducted entirely virtually through a set of online, self-paced webinars (approximately 2 hours) followed by two days of live sessions with a trainer (3.5 hours by Zoom videoconference per day).

Mission Statement

The NEST Collaborative (NEST = Nevada Ensures Support Together) fosters relationships and community by harnessing the power of a statewide coalition to provide virtual, volunteer-hosted social support and technology assistance with a special focus on connecting and engaging older adults, veterans, and adults living with disabilities.

Description

The NEST Collaborative launched on April 1st, 2020 with Nevada CAN (COVID-19 Aging Network) as the program initiative of their Social Support Action Team. The program first served homebound elders across Nevada through virtual, volunteer-hosted, social support and assistance meeting essential needs during COVID. Since then, we have expanded to support not only elders, but also adults living with disabilities and veterans. We promote friendly conversation amongst our Volunteers and Participants as an opportunity for mutual support and connection to local resources when essential needs are not met.
