If you want to help the homeless pets in your community this is one of the most important things you can do! Foster homes are happier and healthier places for the orphaned animals to be in, where our adoptable animals get more attention than we could give them in the shelter. All while learning a ton about their personality, and how they act in a family. That makes it way easier to find the right adopter for them. We are happy to provide any food or supplies you need, and we are a resource and support for you while you foster. This is the perfect way to have a temporary, low stakes, no commitment pet and all while doing good work for homeless animals!

Once you have made the correct choice to be a foster family you will fill out an application with information about your household and previous pet experience. Then we can match you with one of our needy fur-babies. You will sign a contract agreeing to take care of them and that they will be adopted through our shelter, we can send you with any supplies you need, and any history we have on your foster pet. You will discuss how long you are able to foster and set a day to check back in with the shelter.

The best things you can do for your foster-pet is exactly what you will want to do- Love them, play with them, take pictures of them, get to know their personality, tell us all about it, and tell your friends and family all about them too! By showing off your foster, you may just catch the eye of their new adopter!

Here are the types of pets we need the most help with!

Litters, Nursing mommas, and bottle babies- These are the highest need we have, and they can be very demanding to care for. But the outcome can be so rewarding!

Mommas- Pregnant and nursing mommas are never happy in the shelter. All the sounds and smells and commotion makes them terribly stressed. This stress can even lead to health issues for mom or babies. On top of that newborns and moms are at really high risk of getting sick or catching another animal’s illness due to their immune system`s vulnerability. In a home moms and babies do so much better! They are happier and healthier, and they can focus on their growth instead of everything else going on around them.

Litters of puppies or kittens - If you have the time and patients to care for a litter of puppies or kittens while we get a kennel open in our shelter; you will also get all the adorableness and cuddles that come with all that hard work.

Bottle Babies - Some poor babies start out on a tough note. They may have been abandoned by their mother or she may have died. In either case this leaves the very dependent and needy neonatal orphans hungry and scared. Coming into a shelter is really stressful and possibly dangerous for such young babies and they need around the clock care that our staff can`t always give. A foster home ready to bottle feed puppies or kittens is a huge help, and can be the only opportunity some have to make it!

Single Puppies or Kittens - We are generally able to house healthy puppies or kittens together with others about their size to keep them company and let them play out their energy. However sometimes we don`t have other appropriate aged companions, and we hate to leave singles alone at the shelter overnight. If you find yourself wanting a kitten or pup but can`t commit, this is the perfect opportunity for you to have a temporary little buddy!

Loner Cats -cats that need to be only cats. These cats have a hard time finding alone space in a shelter, and that means adopters don't always see them at their best. A foster home free of other felines or with separated spaces would help them shine!

Independent Cats -These cats may hide for a while, and make people earn their trust. A shelter can be really intimidating for them because of the constant stream of strangers. In a calm and loving foster home they will be able to gain confidence and come out of their shell.

Dogs Who Need Etiquette - These dogs will show some issues and may need a little work to get ready for a home. Most people get a dog like this. They are generally well mannered but uneducated in how to behave in a family household setting. It's best for their foster to be previous pet owners.

Dogs That Are Ruff Around The Edges - These dogs are almost always worse in a shelter. Most dogs have moderate issues in a home setting, and then when in a shelter those problems grow, and the dog starts showing how stressed they are by acting out. These dogs are most likely to flourish with one on one attention and training. Their best fit would be an experienced foster home.

Special Needs Pets- When we have an animal that requires extra attention a foster home is the ideal place for them to stay while they get ready for their furever family. We may have an elderly dog who just wants to nap, a HW positive lab, a FIV positive cat, a kitten with an amputation to adjust to ( all of which we have had in the shelter at one point or another). These guys deserve somewhere less stressful and more comfy than a kennel while they wait. The experience needed to care for them will vary drastically on a case by case basis.
