Brief Organizational Description:

AMP! Metro Richmond is a one-to-one school mentoring program operating in Boushall Middle School in Richmond. The AMP! program is a simple and flexible concept based on the belief that everyone has strengths and those strengths can be accessed and reinforced through the gift of caring and listening.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:

Mentors will be matched 1:1 with a 6th, 7th or 8th grader from Boushall Middle School. They are required to meet weekly, on Tuesdays at 12pm when school is in session, forming a relationship that suits the needs of the student. Mentors will come in to the school on the same day and time and the mentees will be there at the school as well. Matches will all meet in the same room together. Some play games. Some read together. Some share common interests in sports, the arts, computers, etc.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
Mentors must fill out an application, interview with the program coordinator, provide 2 references, complete a 1.5 hour new mentor training and a background check.

Time Commitment:
The time commitment for mentoring is always 1 hour for 1 day a week when school is in session. Mentoring this school year will most likely occur on Tuesdays around 12pm. This will be confirmed closer to the start of school. The mentoring year will typically include about 9 weeks during the Fall of 2023 and 16 weeks during Spring of 2024. The mentoring year is from September through April.

Description

AMP! originated in 2006 and operates in Boushall Middle School in Richmond's Southside neighborhood. We recruit, train, and support adult mentors in one-to-one mentoring with middle school students and provide career exploration visits to workplaces in the Richmond Region.
