ORGANIZATION: Village in the Ville

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Village in the Ville offers home repair services to older adults living in the Clintonville, Beechwold, and the University District so that they can continue to age in their homes and in their communities. We do this by connecting older adults in need with "Home Preservationists," local handypeople willing to lend their skills in minor home maintenance, like paint touch up, picture hanging, etc., or major home maintenance, like gutter cleaning, installing railings, etc. If you're a handyperson who enjoys problem solving and working with your hands, all while helping your neighbors, then this volunteer position may be for you!

Because our members have so many different and constantly changing needs, there are an almost unlimited number of ways folks can volunteer with us. This means that we can organize an opportunity that fits your experience, comfort-level, and time schedule. All you have to do is fill out our volunteer application, which can be found at https://villageintheville.helpfulvillage.com/users/sign_up?user_type=new_volunteer. That'll help us connect you with the best opportunity available.

All home maintenance projects are vetted by Village in the Ville staff to ensure that they may be reasonably done by one person and done within a reasonable time frame. At most, projects last up to 3 hours. Moreover, Home Preservationists are not expected to provide materials or use their own tools for the project, unless they'd like to. Instead, Village in the Ville will ensure that Home Preservationists will have all the tools and materials needed for the project.

While we do encourage our Home Preservationists to coordinate with our members once they've been connected, our Service Coordinator, Mahala Baumbarger, is always available to help and address any issues that may arise. After the project has been completed, we ask our Home Preservationists to record their hours of service as well as any comments they may have about the project, something we ask our members to do as well.

With the Village, you’re not just lending a hand, you’re joining a community! You’ll get the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, and build lasting relationships. For so many of our long-term volunteers, volunteering is no longer a means to serve, but a means to catch-up, hang out, and spend time with their friends. In this way, you're getting as much as you put in!

About Village in the Ville

Location:

3222 North High Street, Columbus, OH 43202, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to cultivate a community rooted in connectedness that celebrates diversity and promotes reciprocal volunteer assistance among older adults.

Description

Although we are a program of the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resource Center, we are a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Our story;

A small group of friends noticed the need to support aging folks in Clintonville. They founded Village in the Ville in 2015 after learning about Villages, which are communities that help older folks overcome the challenges of aging.

Our organization has grown to about 100 members and 70 active volunteers. We have helped dozens of our members stay in their homes, rather than moving into nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

We provide services for our members that become harder with age. Our opportunities include, but are not limited to, helping members with; yard care, grocery shopping, transportation to their doctors' appointments, home repair, meal preparation, technology assistance, and snow removal during the winter.

Weekly, we hold events for Village members. Recently, events have included visiting parks, museums, restaurants, pumpkin patches, and shops (in masks, with social distancing). Also, we frequently offer virtual yoga, tai chi, computer proficiency, and art classes, along with regular virtual book club meetings and coffee hours. Frequently, we invite experts to speak to members about various topics, like social justice and health.
