About Wilberforce Trust

The Wilberforce Trust supports people with sight and hearing impairments, including those with other disabilities. We have a wide range of services, from housing, support with daily living to rehabilitation services, technology and equipment assistance, and activity and educational groups. These services create opportunities that enable individuals to live fulfilled lives as independently in their community as possible.

Role Description

Every day 250 people start to lose their sight in the UK.

Over 6,000 people across York live with sight loss and many of them don’t know where to go to access help.

Over 20,000 people in York have hearing loss which makes communication difficult and can lead to social isolation where help is not available.

There are so many ways to help us raise money for our work.

Supporting us via fundraising will make a huge difference in helping us to support people with sight loss, including those with other disabilities, develop opportunities, and enhance the quality of life for those we work with. The contributions you make will help us to achieve our vision to see a world in which all people with sight loss are truly integrated in society with equal opportunities in all aspects of life. It’s up to you whether you fundraise for the Wilberforce Trust as a whole, or for a project such as Club Wilber, our children’s group.

If you want to plan and host your own Fundraising Event, there our resources on our Fundraising website pages to inspire and support you, and our Fundraising Team will be on hand to provide advice, support and information. You can also support our fundraising events by volunteering to support with event set up and close down, support during the event, bucket collecting, and acting as a representative for the Wilberforce Trust. To find out about upcoming Fundraising activities, check our "What’s on" pages on the website, visit our Facebook events pages, or email Jane at j.carter@wilberforcetrust.org.uk

What special qualities do I need to be a volunteer?

Some spare time

An open and friendly nature

Patience

Adaptability

Good communication skills

A sense of humour

Confident working with and approaching members of the public

What will I get out of it?

Volunteering for the Wilberforce Trust gives; a chance to meet new people; to develop new skills; gain experience and knowledge; to be respected and valued for your involvement; the satisfaction of helping others; and valuable use of your spare time. You will also gain insight into the third sector and a small local charity, and training and support from staff.

All fundraising volunteers will receive an induction, given the opportunity to attend Sensory Awareness Training where available, and will receive ongoing support and supervision. We also encourage volunteers to suggest fundraising and event ideas if you have specific interests and ideas which we can support, and to get involved with the planning and running of events if that is something you are interested in. We will provide a reference.
