Volunteer Haitian Creole Interpreters needed ASAP to assist with TPS applications

*Please note that our physical office is currently closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic but we continue to provide our services remotely. In September, we will likely reopen our office on a limited capacity basis so some of the consults may take place in our downtown office.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Rian Immigrant Center is seeking volunteer interpreters fluent in Haitian Creole and English to assist the legal services team in their work with the Haitian community. Over the next eighteen months, Rian attorneys will be helping clients file applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and are in need of interpreters to assist them in doing so. Volunteers will be asked to provide their availability to better aid Rian’s attorneys in their efforts. All interpretation work will occur on weekdays during normal business hours. Currently there are immediate and ongoing opportunities available for volunteers with a fluency in oral interpretation and/or written translation for Haitian Creole.

The assistance of Haitian-Creole interpreters is essential to assist us in providing assistance to as many Haitian clients as possible with their TPS applications. Interpreters will assist attorneys while they meet with applicants. Interpreters should be fluent or native in Haitian-Creole. This is an ideal opportunity for someone interested in using their language skills to help serve in their community, but do not have a lot of time to regularly volunteer. You will be helping to empower immigrants and refugees by supporting our nonprofit legal services team.

TIME COMMITMENT: Between Monday and Friday, 9am-5pm. No evening or weekend availability required.

DATES: We will need volunteers from end of August - February 2023 - please apply now if interested

IN PERSON/REMOTE: Remote opportunity with possible in-person opportunities starting in the Fall (in person is not required if volunteer is unable to come to the office)

RESPONSIBILITIES/ REQUIREMENTS

  • Interpreting for attorneys and DOJ Accredited Representative staff in live 3-way telephone calls with clients, or participating on-camera in video conference meetings (such as Ring Central, Zoom, Google Meet, etc)
  • Calling current and potential clients to schedule appointments, gather basic information

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual (required) in Haitian Creole and English
  • Must have access to a home computer, reliable internet and privacy for sensitive conversations if providing live oral interpretation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Experience with immigrant/refugee population preferred but not required
