Make a difference in your community and help make a positive change for adults learning English.

Literacy for All of Monterey Park (LAMP) at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library provides free ESL classes to adult English language learners. These classes help adults navigate their community, communicate with others, and feel more confident in their daily lives.

Volunteer instructors lead small to large online group classes in five different ESL levels. All volunteers receive materials and training, continued support from the adult literacy coordinator, attend quarterly online Tutor Meetups, and meet 1-2 times per week with their class. A teaching credential is not required.

Students interested in gaining teaching experience and classroom management are also encouraged to apply. The curriculum is flexible and LAMP provides the materials.

This program is funded by the California Library Literacy Services Grant (CLLS) and the Workforce and Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Mission Statement

The mission of the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library is to meet the cultural, educational, and informational needs of the residents of the City of Monterey Park by providing free and open access to its resources and services. The LAMP (Literacy for All of Monterey Park) Program is one avenue of fulfilling this mission.

Description

The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library was one of the first libraries in California to offer literacy services as part of the California Literacy Campaign (CLC), sponsored by the California State Library. Since 1984, LAMP (Literacy for All of Monterey Park) has been committed to helping individuals of the community to improve their skills so that they can reach their goals and fulfill their dreams. Trained volunteers in one-to-one, and small group settings provide tutoring for all ages.

LAMP has already helped many to improve their skills and to reach a variety of goals:

  • to get a job
  • help their children with schoolwork
  • to become more active in community affairs
  • to pursue higher education
