BUILDING BLOCKS FOR KIDS

BBFKids is partnering with USC Hybrid to teach financial literacy and provide career development opportunities to the high school students! We believe in the strength that financial literacy has to empower students in misrepresented communities. This year, we will work with several dozen students in Los Angeles, but our greater mission is to provide this education to communities nationwide.

We'll be in the classroom once a week and are looking for volunteers for each week. You will be provided the exact information and slideshow presentation to teach the students. Additionally, we will be working with you before the volunteer date to answer all your questions and ensure a great experience. In the classroom, you will not be alone -- other volunteers, teachers, the founder, and possibly our college interns will be there as well.

We would love it if you could join us and work towards a future where all people regardless of race, status, gender, and sexual orientation are able to access careers that make them successful and information that will help them be financially secure.

Mission Statement

At Building Blocks for Kids we empower low income students ages of 9-18, by providing a progressive financial literacy/career-based education curriculum and mentorship program that gives them the tools to maximize financial independence and social mobility as adults.

Description

The MORE Program is Building Blocks’ signature financial literacy program. The program is designed to be run inside a classroom during school hours. Teachers, volunteers, and Building Blocks members facilitate the curriculum once a week during the 3-month program period.

This program begins by assessing participants’ baseline financial literacy through a questionnaire and pre-test. In 12 sessions over the course of three months, participants explore a range of financial literacy and career-readiness topics, including: budgeting; banking and investing; setting up a bank account; credit and credit cards; loans and insurance; investment theory; picking stocks and building a portfolio; and taxes. Participants also engage in discussions connecting choices around education to career opportunities.

Throughout the course of the program, participants compete in a team-based Stock Challenge, in which each team creates and follows their own stock portfolio. Participants use real financial data to assess their portfolio’s performance. Upon completion of the program, each student receives a cash prize based on their portfolio’s performance relative to other participants. These monetary incentives are deposited into savings accounts set up by the participants themselves.
