Position

The Board will support the work of Freedom Network USA and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Freedom Network USA’s Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities are centered on leadership, governance and oversight, and include:

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as they develop and implement Freedom Network USA’s strategic plan;
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by Freedom Network USA for evaluating its impact and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics and other methodologies;
  • Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board meetings;
  • Reviewing and, if appropriate, approving Freedom Network USA’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions;
  • Being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities;
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the ED and more frequent feedback;
  • Assisting the ED and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members;
  • Partnering with the ED and other Board Members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out;
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments;
  • Representing Freedom Network USA to stakeholders, acting as an ambassador for the organization;
  • Ensuring Freedom Network USA’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Freedom Network USA serves.

Fundraising

Freedom Network USA’s Board Members will consider Freedom Network USA a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that Freedom Network USA can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Freedom Network USA expects all Board Members to make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Board Terms/Participation

Freedom Network USA’s Board Members will serve an initial one year term and are eligible for re-appointment for additional terms (of 3 and then 2 years, for a total of 6 years). Board meetings will be held every two months, and will generally be held remotely via electronic conferencing (such as web conference or teleconference). Freedom Network USA will strive to compensate Board members’ travel costs for at least one in-person meeting per year when the organization’s budget allows.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Freedom Network USA’s mission and who has a record of leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive experience with significant leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.

Mission Statement

Freedom Network USA is a national alliance of experienced advocates working with survivors of all forms of human trafficking to ensure that trafficked persons have access to justice, safety, and opportunity.

Description

Freedom Network USA was established in 2001 by organizations and individuals with decades of experience in immigrants’, women’s and children’s rights, social services, migrant farmworker advocacy, and human rights activism. We believe that empowering survivors with choices and support leads to transformative, meaningful change. Together, we influence federal and state policy through action and advocacy. We guide the discussion narrative by prioritizing the self-determination and empowerment of survivors in the development of policies, procedures, and programs. We work directly with survivors, whose insights and strengths inform our work. And through our national effort, we increase awareness of human trafficking and provide decision makers, legislators, and other stakeholders with the expertise and tools to make a positive and permanent impact in the lives of all survivors.
