The Furness Library has an opening available for a Shelving Volunteer! Shelving Volunteers are an important part of the daily operations of the library; they are responsible for reshelving new and returned materials including books, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, and magazines. Shelving Volunteers may also assist with special projects as needed including retrieving items from the collection, shifting and reorganizing shelves, and other duties as assigned.

This position does require:

  • Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, reach, bend and stretch
  • Ability to arrange items in alphabetical and numerical order and to develop a working understanding of the Dewey Decimal System
  • Attention to detail
  • The capability to work independently and provide good customer service
  • Basic working knowledge of how to use a library, whether as a patron, volunteer, and/or employee

Training will be provided by Furness librarians, including training on the Dewey Decimal System. We are looking for someone to come in weekly on Wednesdays but the time is flexible.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to be the place in the neighborhood that brings lifelong learning, discovery, and joy to the community.

Description

The Helen Kate Furness Free Library was founded in October 1902 by a group of Nether Providence citizens as the Horace Howard Furness Free Library, named in honor of one of the founders, a renowned Shakespearean scholar whose estate, Lindenshade, was located in what is now Furness Park. The Helen Kate Library has a strong tradition of dedicated volunteers, which has been significant to the success of our beloved neighborhood library. With one of the smallest paid staffs of any library in Delaware County, Helen Kate relies upon the support of volunteers to provide quality service to our community.
