AseraCare volunteers bring many gifts, talents, interests, and experiences to the hospice program. We have an immediate need for administrative volunteers in our Council Bluffs, IA office.

Administrative volunteers play a vital role on the hospice care team by:

  • Assisting with bereavement mailings and/or making phone calls to bereaved family members and friends
  • Assembling admission packets or informational materials for future patients
  • Scanning, faxing, and filing business documents and patient requests
  • Making weekly "tuck-in" phone calls to patients, ensuring they have the supplies and medications they need to be comfortable through the weekends
  • Assisting with other special tasks as assigned, such as staff and volunteer celebrations, support groups, etc.

Your availability, interests, and goals as a volunteer will determine which of these tasks will be your specific responsibilities. We prefer that you are committed to at least 4 hours of volunteer service per month, with a commitment of at least 6 months to a year of service.

COVID-19: Some of our typical protocols have been altered to protect both patients and volunteers during the time of a global pandemic. It is always our first priority to ensure the safety of our patients and volunteers. If needed, we will provide you with personal protective equipment (PPE) and Covid-19 testing. This volunteer role has the potential to be an entirely virtual role if both the care center and volunteer are comfortable with the arrangement. Should the opportunity become virtual, AseraCare would provide you with the equipment needed to complete assigned tasks. We prefer that volunteers be vaccinated to be able to fully perform their responsibilities, but unvaccinated volunteers are encouraged to apply as well!

Reliable transportation to/from your assignment is required. All volunteers must be physically able to complete the tasks assigned to them. All hospice volunteers are required to complete a volunteer orientation. They must also provide a current driver's license and vehicle insurance, pass a criminal background check, and have tuberculosis test. All required training and services are paid for by AseraCare. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Hospice is a program of palliative care and supportive services for terminally ill patients and their families. A care team that includes volunteers work together to provide services. All team members are trained in providing emotional support to the patient and family. The direct care hospice team goes wherever the patient lives to provide services.

Hospice neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Rather, its goal is to affirm life and encourage the patient to maintain control over decisions that affect his or her quality of life. Support is available 24 hours a day. Hospice care is ready to meet the ever-changing needs experienced by that patient and their family.

If you have suffered a significant loss, we encourage you to wait at least one year to provide direct service or public relations support. Bereavement resources are available to our volunteers who need them.
